NEED TO KNOW

  • Skyler Gisondo recently recalled filming a promposal video on the set of his 2014 movie Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb
  • The then-17-year-old enlisted the help of costars Ben Stiller and the late Robin Williams
  • Gisondo called the video “probably the greatest moment of my life”

Skyler Gisondo may hold the record for starriest promproposal.

While working on the 2014 movie Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb with Ben Stiller and Robin Williams, Gisondo told Entertainment Weekly recently that he roped those screen legends into helping him record a video asking his girlfriend to accompany him to high school prom.

“I was 17 and Ben really took me under his wing,” recalled Gisondo, now 30, who played the son of Stiller’s character. “And the defining moment was, I wanted to make, like, a prom-posal video asking my girlfriend to prom. And I wrote like a little one-page skit, and I asked Ben and Robin if they would do it, if they would be in it. And they both said yes.”

Thinking the video “would be a quick little thing,” the actor was instead surprised by his costars’ level of commitment.

Stiller, 60, “gathered the whole crew, he had our cinematographer light it up,” recalled Gisondo. “And then the second we started rolling, the script went out the window, and it was like this three- or four-minute thing.”

Footage in EW’s clip shows a young Gisondo standing outside holding a rose — with a monkey on his head. Flanking him are Stiller and the late Williams, riffing about being “verklempt” at Gisondo’s romantic gesture.

“So beautiful,” says the Oscar winner in the video, pretending to weep with joy. “A monkey and a rose, that’s so Freudian!”

“It was like the greatest, to this day, probably the greatest moment of my life,” admitted Gisondo.

As he confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter back in 2014, the move did in fact secure Gisondo his prom date.

Williams, who in the Night at the Museum movies played U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, died by suicide in 2014 at age 63 after suffering from Lewy Body Dementia, a type of brain disease that affected his thinking, memory and movement control.

Over a decade after their Night at the Museum sequel, Stiller and Gisondo reunited to play father and son in Focker-in-Law, the fourth installment of the comedy franchise that began with 2000’s Meet the Parents. The movie costars Ariana Grande, Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner, Teri Polo and Beanie Feldstein.
