Greenland’s security ‘firmly’ belongs in Nato, territory’s prime minister says

Greenland’s prime minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also went a bit further, saying on his Facebook that he understood the unease with which many people followed the reports about the US interest in Greenland.

He said:

That is why it is important to be absolutely clear: Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and part of Nato through the Commonwealth. This means that our security and defence belong in Nato. That is a fundamental and firm line.

He acknowledged that “there has been a lot of international attention in our country,” and that “in itself is positive,” reflecting the territory’s “strategic importance.”

He then repeated the government’s statement line on working on strengthening the territory’s security through Nato, before pointedly stressing:

We are a democratic society that makes our own decisions. And our actions are based on international law …”

Danish, Greenlandic foreign ministers coordinate ahead of talks with US

Meanwhile, Denmark’s foreign minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and his Greenlandic counterpart Vivian Motzfeldt have met today for talks ahead of their big meeting with Rubio on Wednesday, Danish media reported.

Rasmussen posted a picture from the meeting on his Instagram account.
