Seven teenagers were injured in a fatal crash involving a stolen car in Maryland.

At approximately 5:25 a.m. local time on Tuesday, Aug. 4, police responded to reports of a “serious collision” between a Toyota Matrix and a stolen Kia Optima at the intersection of Great Seneca Highway and Clopper Road in Germantown, the Montgomery County Police (MCP) said in a statement.

“Officers located both vehicles with extensive damage,” said the MCP. “…The preliminary investigation determined that the white Kia Optima, reported stolen from a Montgomery County residence several hours after the collision, entered the intersection and struck a Toyota Matrix traveling on Clopper Road.”

The male driver of the Toyota Matrix died at the scene. Seven juveniles aged between 12 and 15, who were in the stolen Kia Optima, were injured in the crash, the statement added.

“The juvenile driver of the Kia was transported to an area hospital in critical but stable condition,” the statement continued. “The remaining juvenile occupants sustained injuries of varying severity and were transported to several area trauma centers.”

The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) said in a Facebook post that they initially received reports of “one vehicle overturned” with some occupants trapped following the crash. Two people were later rescued from the vehicle, NBC4 Washington reported.

Fire and Rescue personnel conducted “rescue operations, stabilizing vehicles, extricating trapped occupants, providing emergency medical care, and coordinating patient transport to area hospitals,” said the MCFRS about their actions after the crash.

Photos shared by the department showed the blue Toyota Matrix completely crushed, with its hood destroyed. The Kia Optima was seen overturned on a hedge on the sidewalk surrounded by scattered debris as emergency responders surround the vehicle.

NBC4 Washington reported that a person informed the police that someone was driving erratically in the area before the crash. Another resident reported seeing a car on fire after the crash, per ABC 7 News WJLA.

The MCP is investigating the incident.

“At this age, they’re not supposed to be driving,” Goff told the outlet. “You do not have a license at the age of 15. Right now, I would say, parents, just make sure you know where your children are.”
