Brooklyn rockers Sorry Darling releasing the fizzing new single ‘Like You’, taken from the forthcoming EP Mirrors, due October 6th.
‘Like You’ sees the band take a more melodic route than some of their heavier cuts, pairing a melancholic mood with the band’s familiar rock ‘n’ roll drive. Lead vocalist Liz Wagner Biro brings a smoky, plaintive presence to the track, recalling the distinctive ache of Placebo’s Brian Molko while giving the song its own sharp emotional edge. With the melodic, vexing vocal delivery forward in the mix, the track leans into its catchy chorus melody whilst the grungy guitars give the track a punchy weight.
Lyrically, ‘Like You’ explores the slow erosion of identity that can take place within a relationship, and the moment when someone begins to question their own sense of self and capability.
“It’s almost as if you can do everything right, everything you think is being asked of you, and you still might not win,” the band add. “The real winning is choosing yourself.”
‘Like You’ offers the latest preview of the upcoming EP Mirrors, a record shaped around ideas of reflection, projection and the complicated ways people see themselves through their relationships with others. The EP’s title plays on the many functions of a mirror: it can reflect what has already happened, reveal what is waiting around the corner, or redirect light, and sometimes blame, towards whatever needs to be seen.
The record was made with producer Mike Dwyer at The Bunker in Cairo, New York, marking a change in approach for the quartet. Rather than commuting to recording sessions as they had during the making of their self-titled debut LP, the band decamped upstate together for the first time, giving the new material a different environment in which to take shape.
“We have been sitting on these songs for a minute now, and rather than wait to complete an LP we decided they needed to be out there and stand on their own,” the band shares. “Mike is the best – he let us steer the ship but always had great ideas when we’d get stuck.”
Mirrors represents a bridge between Sorry Darling’s established sound and the direction they are heading next, retaining the band’s instinct for big guitars and immediate hooks while pushing further into the emotional territory at the centre of their songwriting.
‘Like You’ is out now with the full Mirrors EP following on October 6th. The EP will be released alongside Sorry Darling’s UK tour dates.
