Cynthia Nixon, we’d do the same thing!
The Sex and the City alum, 60, revealed on the red carpet of the 2026 Emmys that much of her closet to date consists of the wardrobe worn by her character, Miranda Hobbs, on Sex and the City, which wrapped in February 2004 after six seasons.
The topic arose when Nixon was asked if she’s kept anything from her character Ada Brook’s closet on HBO’s The Gilded Age, which is nominated for outstanding drama series at the award ceremony held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California on Monday, Sept. 14.
“Maybe some gloves. That’s about it. It’s not the kind of thing you could go to the Duane Reade in,” she joked of the accessory she wears for her role set in the early 1880s in New York City, adding, “The gloves are great. The gloves are great.”

While she wouldn’t necessarily reach for those Gilded Age-era items today, Nixon confirmed that her approach to her Sex and the City wardrobe was the complete opposite. In fact, she revealed that the crew was lax with what they allowed the cast to keep after filming wrapped.

“You know, they let us have anything that we want,” she revealed when confirming that she took stuff from her character Miranda’s closet, noting that “maybe a third” of her wardrobe to date is made up of clothes from that role. “It’s great,” she said.

Nixon recalled a specific moment that sticks out to her most from when Sex and the City was honored at the Emmys. “I think the first time we won Best Comedy was… I mean, we thought we’d died and gone to heaven,” she recalled of the win at the 53rd Primetime Emmy Awards in November 2001.
Nixon played Miranda alongside Sarah Jessica Parker‘s Carrie Bradshaw, Kim Cattrall‘s Samantha Jones and Kristin Davis‘ Charlotte York on Sex and the City. She appeared in all six seasons of the show between 1998 and 2004, returning for 2008’s Sex and the City film and its sequel, 2010’s Sex and the City 2.

In 2021, she starred in the revival series, And Just Like That…, which concludes with its third season in August 2025. On The Gilded Age, Nixon plays Ada, the spinster sister of Agnes (Christine Baranski), in all three seasons.
In November 2021, Parker revealed that she has most of her Sex and the City closet in storage. She said that she still owns all of the clothes her character wore throughout the six seasons and two movies during her cover interview for the December 2021 issue of Vogue.
“I had all of the original stuff in my own storage. Furniture, clothes, everything, packed according to season and episode and scene,” Parker noted. “I kept every single solitary thing.”
She debuted in her most beloved role when the show premiered on HBO in 1998, based on the column and book of the same name by Candace Bushnell. Parker played the iconic sex columnist who had a passion for designer shoes.
