A tiny Scottish island used by Bonnie Prince Charlie to escape the British after his famous defeat at the Battle of Culloden has gone on sale.
The 970-acre island of Wiay in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, lies about 190 miles northwest of Edinburgh and is up for sale at £995,000 (about $1.32 million), with real estate firm Bell Ingram.
Bonnie Prince Charlie (real name Charles Edward Stuart), was a claimant to the British throne and led the Jacobite uprising in 1745 in a bid to restore his family to power following the removal of King James II in 1888, according to the National Trust for Scotland.

After the British army defeated his forces at the Battle of Culloden in the Scottish Highlands, he is believed to have hidden in a cave on the island as part of his efforts to evade capture.
The cave, known as Prince Charlie’s Rest, is at the foot of Beinn a’ Tuath, the island’s highest hill. Per The Herald, it’s thought he used it as a lookout for British naval ships scouring the area for him.
Centuries later, the uninhabited island is now a much calmer area of sandy beaches, freshwater lakes, the ruins of an old cottage and wildlife including golden and white-tailed sea eagles, according to Bell Ingram’s property listing.
Planning permission was previously given to restore the cottage, but has since lapsed.
In the past, the island has supported about 200 sheep, too, with land for grazing on its lower slopes, the listing says.

Wiay doesn’t have any services, so the town of Balivanich on the nearby island of Benbecula provides the nearest source of shops, supermarkets, healthcare facilities, schools and cafés — and an airport to mainland Scotland.
Prospective buyers would be able to fish in the lakes, however, while sporting rights are also included in the sale, per Bell Ingram.
There are also views across to Benbecula, while the Cuillin mountains of the Isle of Skye can also be visible on clear days.

The island was previously put up for sale in 2013, starting at £500,000 (about $661,000), again with Bell Ingram, which described it as an island full of “history and beauty” at the time, per The Herald.
PEOPLE reached out to Bell Ingram for comment but did not hear back.
