CHVRCHES are back with Overthinker, the second single from their forthcoming fifth album, All The King’s Men, due out on 22 January 2027.
The Glasgow trio have swapped political commentary for something much more personal this time around. Overthinker tackles complicated family relationships, depression and the difficulty of loving someone who can be both a source of comfort and emotional turmoil.
It’s classic CHVRCHES territory musically, with pulsing synths and a soaring chorus, but there’s a rawness to Lauren Mayberry’s lyrics that suggests the band are heading somewhere different. The track has already been named BBC Radio 1’s Hottest Record.
The release follows an intimate charity performance for just 100 fans at Glasgow’s Assumption Studios, a converted church where the band recorded their new album.
All The King’s Men marks CHVRCHES’ first album in almost six years. Following 2021’s Screen Violence, Mayberry, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty stepped away from the band in 2023 to pursue their own creative interests.
When they reunited, they ditched the remote recording process of their previous album and returned to Glasgow for a series of intensive writing sessions. Their influences had shifted too, with everything from PJ Harvey and Massive Attack to Nick Drake and British cinema finding its way into the creative process.
The result is an 11-track record that reportedly pushes beyond the band’s familiar synth-pop sound, incorporating indie rock, acoustic instrumentation and a distinctly British perspective.
Last month’s lead single, Roses, tackled Britain’s social and political tensions. Now Overthinker turns the focus inward, offering another glimpse of a band willing to shake up its own formula.
With All The King’s Men arriving in January, CHVRCHES appear ready to start a very different chapter.
