A maximum field of 22 runners is heading to post for the opening race of the day, and while they will be stretched right across the track, both the draw and pace angles on the straight course at the Knavesmire could help to narrow the field down to a manageable shortlist.
A low draw is a significant advantage, though admittedly the bookies are well aware of this too and the top five in the betting – Corolla Point, The Man, Toca Madera, Air Force One and Lexington Blitz – will all be leaving single-figure stalls.
Horses that race on or close to the pace also tend to come out on top, and the speediest individuals among that quintet are Toca Madera and Lexington Blitz, and the former arrives in excellent form having finished just over a length behind the winner in the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood last time out without getting much luck in running.
His previous form over five furlongs at the same track gives him a big chance and he has drawn very well in stall four.

INTERNATIONAL STAKES CONTENDER: Constitution River

Aidan O’Brien’s main contender has taken on the mantle of the season’s leading three-year-old in training since the unfortunate news last week that Bow Echo, the Sussex Stakes winner, had been retired due to injury. After just six starts, he is already on a world rating of 124, 7lb behind Ombudsman, and has obvious scope to close the gap, at the very least, on the Knavesmire today.
He announced himself as a three-year-old with an easy romp to success in the Dee Stakes at Chester – marking himself out as a potential star by recording an exceptional time – and duly confirmed his Group One quality with a win in the French Derby at Chantilly less than a month later.
Having proved himself his own generation, Constitution River then stepped into open company and swatted six rivals aside in the Group One Eclipse Stakes at Sandown in early July.
He has something to find with the more experienced Ombudsman on the ratings, but more than enough time and scope to do so.

The clock is ticking down towards the sprint handicap at 1.50, but there’s plenty of time to run the tape over the Big Two in today’s feature event, starting with the narrow favourite, Ombudsman.
He arrives today following a second successive victory in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he showed an exceptional turn of foot down the outside to charge past Minnie Hauk and Daryz – last year’s second and winner in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe respectively – and win by four lengths.
John & Thady Gosden’s five-year-old was also a three-and-a-half length winner of this race last year, after a strangely-run race in which his pacemaker, Birr Castle, appeared to have got loose on the lead and was only worn down inside the final furlong.
He is also currently the world’s joint top-rated middle-distance horse, alongside the brilliant Hong Kong-based sprinter, Ka Ying Rising, and a convincing win today could see him improve to clear leader in the race to be named Racehorse of the Year in January.
Some slightly disappointing news to report from the Knavesmire: after weeks of heatwaves and drought warnings, the weather has taken a distinct turn for the worse. It’s been raining steadily for an hour now, and there’s not much sign of a let-up.
If it carries on like this for too much longer, we could conceivably be looking at a going change to good-to-soft.
Preamble
Good afternoon from the Knavesmire in York on day one of the Ebor Festival 2026, when the first meeting between Ombudsman and Constitution River, two of the best middle-distance horses in global Flat racing this year, in the Group One International Stakes is the feature event on the card at 3.35.
It is a head-to-head with twists and sub-plots, worth far more to the connections of the two horses than their share of a £1.5m prize fund. Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin and the Coolmore Stud operation in Ireland, the twin superpowers of global racing and bloodstock, field Ombudsman and Constitution River respectively, while there has also been a little needle – largely but not wholly light-hearted – between John Gosden and Aidan O’Brien, the two horses’ trainers, in the past.
Gosden has suggested on more than one occasion that O’Brien’s habit of fielding multiple runners, including one or more that race up with the pace, in Group Ones can make life difficult for sole rivals from other yards to get a fair crack. It was cited, in fact, as one of the reasons why Ombudsman did not travel to Leopardstown for last year’s Irish Champion Stakes, with Gosden saying that his horse, who races off the pace, would not “appreciate running against multiple entries from one stable on a track with a short straight.”
O’Brien has three of the nine runners today – Hawk Mountain and the likely front-runner Action are the others – while Gosden also has a likely pace-setter, Devil’s Advocate, in the field.
Elsewhere on the card, potential St Leger horses go on trial in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at 3.00, and several up-and-coming two-year-olds go to post for the Group Three Acomb Stakes at 2.25.
There was nearly 2mm of rain here overnight, the going on the Knavesmire is good, and we are under way on the track with a 22-runner sprint handicap over the straight five furlongs at 1.50.
