Robert De Niro’s teenage daughter has kept him updated on new movies and television shows.
During his appearance on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, the Focker-in-Law star, 83, responded to a sweet question posed to him by film producer Jane Rosenthal about what he’s been watching recently with his 14-year-old daughter Helen. De Niro, who’s a father to seven children with four different women, shared that he often winds up liking the movies and shows she’s watching when he walks by the television.
“I’m trying to tell her that we should look at movies,” he shared, before continuing, “She looks at things like Stranger Things, which got me into it. I saw a movie called Housemaid. It was good.”
“I saw another movie that she, you know, I’m walking by her while she’s watching and I say, ‘That’s not bad,’” De Niro added. “In just walking by I get a sense of the film. But, I don’t like to look at those, so I wind up looking at [them] because she wants to look at them. I’d rather find classics that she could look at.”
Asked if he showed her anything that she liked, the Zero Day star said he didn’t, adding that it’s “hard” to find something teenagers will enjoy with their parents.
“No, it’s hard. It’s hard,” he shared. “She does very little on her iPhone at this point. [I’m] keeping that very under wraps as much as I can.”
In addition to his daughter Helen, the Academy Award winner shares daughter Drena and son Raphael, 49, with his first wife Diahnne Abbott, twins Julian and Airyn, 30, with his former girlfriend Toukie Smith, son Elliot, 28, with his ex-wife Grace Hightower, and daughter Gia, 3, with his girlfriend Tiffany Chen.
In August, while speaking to PEOPLE about his new Netflix movie The Whisper Man, De Niro opened up about balancing a busy career with fatherhood.
“I don’t know if there is a secret,” he told PEOPLE of the key to fatherhood in an exclusive interview. “It’s just managing it all. And there’s no way around not feeling a little guilty about not being there at times you should or you think you should.”
“It’s a new experience. It’s not like you’ve taken courses on it and stuff,” he continued of first becoming a father. “You can, of course, but you don’t. You just jump in and you have the child and you got to… That’s it.”

The Goodfellas actor, who starred as the estranged father of Adam Scott’s character Tom in the movie, also opened up about how he feels if his children follow in his acting footsteps. “I’m okay with it, it’s just not as easy as you would think,” he told PEOPLE, adding that there are realities to becoming an actor, no matter the era.
“I mean, I remember when I was younger, there were less opportunities.” De Niro said. “There’s one or two or three independent films, then the studio films, plays off-Broadway, off-off-Broadway. There wasn’t that much. And now, there’s so much more, it seems, but it still is just as difficult for people to get jobs as actors as is.”
The two-time Oscar winner noted that his children can face added pressure to prove themselves following his own success in the industry.
“It’s a commitment. And you have to show, especially if you’re a kid in a situation like mine or Adam [Scott], people, no matter what [the kids] say, how they behave, what they do, they’re saying, ‘Show me,’ ” he said. “And if you don’t look like you’re really sincere about it and busting your ass and working hard, it’ll have a negative impact. If you really can, over time, cumulatively impress people that you really are sincere about it and will go the distance, then it’ll work the other way 10 times.”
“The most important thing is to work hard because you really want to do it,” he continued. “And you really are committed. It’s not easy… It’s hard, and you have to work hard to get somewhere. And even then, there’s no guarantee.”
