Melissa Fumero recently recalled doing stunts on the set of Brooklyn Nine-Nine while she was just five days away from giving birth.
Fumero, 44, who is mom to sons Enzo, 10, and Axel, 6, spoke about the experience while appearing on a Brooklyn Nine-Nine Retrospective panel at New York Comic Con on Oct. 8 alongside former costars Joe Lo Truglio and Stephanie Beatriz, as well as the show’s co-creator Dan Goor.
During the conversation, Goor commended the actors for their extreme dedication to the series, which ran on FOX from 2013 to 2018, and then on NBC from 2019 to 2021.

“All three of you were so committed to everything. I mean, we were reminiscing in the back and Melissa — when she was nine months pregnant — was doing stunts,” Goor, 51, told the audience.
“Standing on a table, beating up [Andy Samberg’s character], Jake,” added Fumero, who played Type-A detective Amy Santiago.
“Enzo was born five days after,” she continued, which elicited cheers from the Comic Con crowd.
She went on to recall another moment during the same season in which her character does a polar plunge.
“I was six months pregnant and I wasn’t supposed to wear the big puffy coat,” she recalled of the season 3 storyline. “But then I popped the week before, and I was like, ‘I got to wear a coat.’
She added that the brisk temperatures made her feel like Enzo was doing “somersaults” in her stomach.
“I was like, ‘It kinda feels like the baby is doing somersaults? Is that bad?’ ” she joked, eliciting laughter from the audience.

Fumero went on to say that Enzo turned out “great,” speculating that the plunge is perhaps the source of all his “energy.”
Fumero, who shares Enzo and Axel with her husband, actor and model David Fumero, announced she was expecting her first child in an Instagram post in November 2015.
“Amazing time at our surprise baby shower yesterday. Oh, PS- I’m pregnant. 😜💕💕,” she wrote in the post’s caption.

They welcomed Enzo in March 2016.
The actress announced she was expecting her second child in an Instagram post in November 2019. The post featured a mirror selfie of Fumero and her baby bump.
“Oh yeah, I’m hella pregnant,” she wrote in the post’s caption. “To be honest, I haven’t felt like posting about it because this pregnancy has been way harder and … I don’t feel that cute? But yesterday I got a really intense massage, an awesome chiropractic adjustment, and my hair feels thicker … so I feel a little bit cute today. ✌🏽🤓 #herewegoagain #babyboynumerodos.”

While the star’s first pregnancy was not incorporated into her character’s storyline on the show, the writers made her second pregnancy a major plot point in season 7 — specifically in the evolving, fan-favorite romance between Amy and Jake.
Amy goes into labor during the season 7 finale, giving birth to McClane “Mac” Peralta.

Fumero opened up about her experience with motherhood in a Mother’s Day post on Instagram in May 2023, which featured photos and video of both of her kids.
“Motherhood is WILD. Nothing prepares you,” she began in the post’s caption. It is all consuming. It’s hard. It makes your heart explode over and over. It’s joyful. It’s fun. It’s also very not fun. It’s opposing feelings stretching you in different directions all day every day.”
“And along the way you grow and learn and you fall and you get back up and try again,” she continued. “And yet, I stand in total gratitude that I get to be a mom to these two little boys. Watching them grow, all the joyful and hard bits of it, has been such a gift.”
“I’m also grateful to all the mamas and loved ones in my village (IYKYK) I wouldn’t survive this without them. 🌼🌻💐Happy Mothers Day to all 💐🌷🌸. And to all the women who miss their moms, or wish to be moms, or don’t talk to their moms- I send you so much love today,” Fumero added.
