NEED TO KNOW
- Kendall Jenner opened up about how she and her sisters’ approach to reality TV has evolved in the nearly two decades they’ve been onscreen during the Oct. 29 episode of The Kardashians
- The model, who was 11 when Keeping Up with the Kardashians premiered in 2007, said “everything was just a little bit more free” in the early days
- “I think caring the least amount about it is probably the safest,” Jenner said of how to approach reality TV
The Kardashians is a very different show than Keeping Up with the Kardashians was — and the family knows it.
During the Thursday, Oct. 29, episode of the Hulu reality series, which premiered in 2022, just one year after KUWTK concluded its 20-season run, Kendall Jenner offered insight into how she and her sisters Kourtney, Kim, Khloé and Kylie have shifted their approach to reality TV over the years.
“Cancel culture definitely plays a role into certain things,” Kendall, 30, said in a confessional. “You can go back and watch old episodes of our show, and I think everything was just a little bit more free.”
“We’ve now gone through years of scrutiny or false narratives. Being me or one of my sisters, you’re naturally gonna be more guarded,” the model said. “It’s definitely gotten worse. But I think caring the least amount about it is probably the safest way.”

The reflection came after she and Scott Disick discussed some of his wilder moments on Keeping Up, including the infamous 2010 episode in which, while drunk, he shoved money in a waiter’s mouth after Kris cut him off during dinner.
Kendall called that an “iconic” scene, “not in a good way,” and Disick, who dated Kourtney on-and-off for nearly a decade and shares three kids with her, agreed, calling his behavior “horrific.” When she asked if watching the show back makes him “cringe,” Disick replied, “I don’t see if often, but if I did, yeah.”
“Some of it’s f—ing funny,” Kendall said. “There’s so many good Rob and Scott moments.”
“I can’t believe we would do this s—,” Scott said of how he and Rob, 39, behaved.
The famous family has been putting their lives on TV since 2007. Kris, 70, once said she “never thought the exposure would be harmful,” and instead viewed the show as a chance for them to “have the time of our lives.”
“I just thought this was going to be a great journey,” she told Vogue Arabia of her decision to make the show when she was 51. At the time of its premiere, Kourtney was 28, Kim was 27, Khloé was 23, Rob was 20, Kendall was 11 and Kylie was 8.

“I was very optimistic, and I’m also a girl who looks at the glass as half full,” she said. “We were working in our stores in Calabasas, and I thought this would be a great way to give exposure to our business, as it was like an instant focus group. This was an immediate marketing tool and something that could come in handy for other things. I knew this was not a gamble.”
New episodes of The Kardashians stream Thursdays on Hulu.
