Alabama soul heavyweights St. Paul & The Broken Bones are heading back to Australia in May 2027, bringing their formidable live show to five cities before crossing the Tasman for their first-ever New Zealand headline dates.
The tour kicks off at Perth’s Astor Theatre on 5 May before hitting Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide, with a Sydney stop at the Enmore Theatre on 12 May. Wellington and Auckland round out the run.
And they’re returning with new music. Fresh from the release of their Proxy EP, the eight-piece are entering another chapter in a career built on blistering brass, deep grooves and the extraordinary vocal firepower of frontman Paul Janeway.
Formed in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2011, St. Paul & The Broken Bones have spent more than a decade dragging classic Southern soul into the present. Janeway’s gospel-soaked vocals are the main attraction, but the band’s muscular rhythm section and three-piece horn attack give the music its considerable punch.
Their self-titled sixth album, released in 2025, marks another shift in direction. Recorded at the legendary FAME Studios and produced by Eg White, whose credits include Adele and Celine Dion, the record pushes beyond traditional soul into psychedelic funk, gospel and cinematic rock.
Tracks including Sushi and Coca-Cola and Going Back find the band expanding their sound without abandoning the emotional directness that made them such a compelling proposition in the first place.
Their reputation onstage is equally impressive. They’ve performed alongside The Rolling Stones, Lizzo and Black Pumas, while festival appearances at Coachella, Glastonbury, Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo have introduced their high-octane soul to audiences around the world. Elton John has even invited them to perform at his Oscar party.
But the real attraction remains the live experience. With Janeway out front and a band capable of switching from delicate soul balladry to full-throttle funk, St. Paul & The Broken Bones are built for the stage.
