Four decades of riffs, hooks and wonderfully oversized rock ’n’ roll attitude are heading back to Australia, with Danish veterans D-A-D announcing The Very Best Of Tour.

The tour will see the Copenhagen band reach across a catalogue stretching back to the early 1980s, putting the songs that established D-A-D as one of Denmark’s most enduring rock exports firmly at the centre of the set.

‘Sleeping My Day Away’ remains the obvious calling card, the track that helped carry D-A-D far beyond Denmark and remains inseparable from their late-’80s breakthrough. Alongside it, audiences can expect ‘Laugh ’n’ a 1/2’, ‘Grow or Pay’, ‘Bad Craziness’, ‘Everything Glows’ and ‘Girl Nation’, with The Very Best Of Tour designed as a career-spanning trip through the band’s history.

Formed in Copenhagen in 1982, D-A-D initially operated under the name Disneyland After Dark before shortening it following objections from the rather more famous Disneyland. What followed was a career that moved from the Danish underground towards international recognition without sanding away the eccentricities that made the band interesting in the first place.

Part of D-A-D’s longevity also comes from the fact that they have never treated rock ’n’ roll as an especially solemn business. Their concerts have built a reputation around the combination of muscular riffs, enormous choruses and a sense of theatre, with frontman Jesper Binzer working the crowd while bassist Stig Pedersen has become a spectacle unto himself. His collection of increasingly improbable two-string basses has long been part of the visual language of a D-A-D show.

For longtime Australian followers, it is another opportunity to reconnect with a band whose relationship with its audience has always been particularly physical. For anyone arriving via ‘Sleeping My Day Away’ for the first time, there are four decades of Danish rock waiting behind it.
